Step-by-step approach
  1. Identify the topic sentence.
  2. Look for demonstratives (this, these) that point to prior nouns.
  3. Trace connectors (however, therefore).
  4. Read the ordered paragraph aloud mentally to confirm.

Find the topic sentence (no pronouns pointing backwards); use pronouns and connectors to chain the rest.
Common mistakes
  • • Starting with a sentence that has 'this' or 'these' without a referent.
  • • Ignoring pronoun chains.

  • • Topic sentences usually contain full noun phrases, not pronouns.
  • • Read your final order aloud in your head.
