PTE vs IELTS: Which English test should you take in 2026?

A practical comparison of PTE Academic and IELTS Academic — how they differ in format, scoring, cost and speed of results.

PTE Academic and IELTS Academic are both accepted by most Australian universities and by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for skilled migration. Deciding which one to take comes down to five practical factors.

Format and delivery

PTE Academic is delivered entirely on a computer. Every response — spoken, written, or clicked — is captured and scored by an automated system. IELTS Academic offers both computer-delivered and paper-delivered options, with the Speaking test conducted face-to-face (in person or via video) with a certified examiner.

Scoring and consistency

PTE scoring is machine-driven, which many candidates find fairer for pronunciation because there is no examiner bias. IELTS scoring is human, which many candidates find fairer for content because a human can appreciate nuance. Both tests have their own equivalents to band 6, 7 and 8.

Test length and results speed

PTE Academic runs for approximately 2 hours and results are typically available within two working days. IELTS Academic is a similar length but the Speaking test may be scheduled on a separate day; results are typically available within 3–5 working days for computer-delivered tests.

Cost and accepting institutions

Prices vary by country and change often — always check the current price on the official test-provider website. Both tests are accepted by every Group of Eight Australian university and the Australian Department of Home Affairs, but some UK, US and Canadian institutions prefer IELTS or TOEFL — verify with your target university.

Which is easier?

There is no universally easier test. Candidates with fast typing and confident microphone use often prefer PTE. Candidates who feel more natural speaking with a human examiner often prefer IELTS. Take a diagnostic in both and compare.
