Applying to an Australian university as an international student is not one big decision — it is twelve small ones spread over roughly a year. This is the timeline we use with the applicants we support.
Months 1–2: Discover
Longlist 8–12 universities. Anchor your shortlist to course fit, city preference and realistic English-proficiency requirements — not marketing brochures.
Month 3: Sit your English test
Book IELTS Academic, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT. Sit a genuine diagnostic first; only book the real exam when you are consistently hitting your target.
Months 4–5: Applications
Most Australian universities open direct applications on rolling deadlines. Aim to lodge to your top three choices by month 5. Personal statements should be genuinely yours — universities detect ghost-written applications.
Months 6–7: Offers and CoE
You receive conditional or full offers. Once you accept, the university issues a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
Months 8–9: Student visa lodgement
Lodge your Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) with the Department of Home Affairs. This step is legal in nature — refer to a MARA-registered migration agent if in doubt.
FAQ
How early should I start?
12 months before the intake you are targeting is comfortable; 6 months is possible but rushed for scholarship applicants.
